Isaiah 57:19 says, “I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord; and I will heal him.”
God creates the fruit of your lips. Does this mean you can say something once and God will do it? No! Some people use this verse to countenance the idea that we can command God to do what we want. Or that some people bring catastrophe upon themselves by speaking fear-filled words. We don’t have the authority to command God. He is our Lord! We do have the authority to speak what He speaks and expect Him to be faithful to His Word. That is who He is – faithful. You do need to watch your words and your thoughts, bringing them into alignment with God’s will. However, if you speak a fearful word in a moment of crisis or without thinking, does that mean that word will be created?
Today, God reminded me of the Israelites in the wilderness.
Numbers 11:1 – And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it; and His anger was kindled…”
Numbers 11:10 – (concerning manna) Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly…
Numbers 13:26-14:31 – (When 10 of the 12 spies brought a bad report of the Promised Land, saying they could not enter into the land because the inhabitants were too strong, they all started murmuring and saying they would die in the wilderness.) 27 (God said) How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against Me. 28 Say unto them, “As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as you have spoken in My ears, so will I do to you.”
Yes, God gave them what they spoke so rashly. But He was merciful for a long time before He let them have what they had spoken so many times. It had become a lifestyle for them to complain. They retained their slave mentality despite God’s deliverance, provision, miracles and promises. They had murmured and complained from the time they left Egypt, but it wasn’t until they refused to enter the Promised Land and said again that they would be better off dying in the wilderness that God created the fruit of their lips. He also created the fruit of Joshua’s and Caleb’s lips who said they were well able to take the land with God’s help.
Maybe you have gotten in the habit of complaining. If so, it is time to reconsider your thought life. Be obedient to God and be transformed into the image of Christ by renewing your mind with His Word. Be persistent in speaking God’s Word, no matter the circumstances. It may be your overall outlook on life and subsequent words in your life that He creates. Yes, you will answer for every idle, useless, unbelieving word you speak (Matthew 12:36). God may create what you speak one time, but He is also merciful. If your heart is right, and you truly repent of your negative words, I believe He will be merciful and not create everything we speak. Take your thoughts captive before they become a mindset leading down the wrong path. You don’t want to “die in the wilderness!”
Notice the second part of Isaiah 57:19. God wants us to have peace and to heal us. You won’t have peace until you take your thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).
